Father Mike (whom she sometimes calls "Poppy" - clearly a hidden reference to George Herbert Walker Bush of Rose & Grave fame) is his usual amiable clueless self. Probably Garry Trudeau (who is a member of Scroll & Key...oops, er, Quill & Ink) is suggesting that if you want to know what your child is thinking, check out his/her bookshelf.
